A Tranquil Escape and a Symphony of Flavors

Vermont, a state renowned for its bucolic landscapes and charming towns, offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life. As the second least populated state in the US, its tranquility is palpable. Mrs. Kay and I embarked on a Vermont adventure, traversing its scenic byways and immersing ourselves in its unique character. Our journey began in Montpelier, the state capital, where the absence of billboards was a striking reminder of Vermont's commitment to preserving its natural beauty. The very idea of a landscape unmarred by advertising was a refreshing concept, and demonstrated the state's appreciation for its surroundings.

Our route led us to one of Vermont's iconic covered bridges, a picturesque symbol of its rural heritage. For me, it was a first-time experience, a revelation of architectural charm and historical significance. As we filmed our introductory segment for our Vermont video, we encountered a couple on a quest to visit every covered bridge in the state, having already conquered all those in Pennsylvania. Their dedication to this unique pursuit was inspiring, a testament to the allure of these structures.

VERMONT FARMS

After settling into our hotel, we ventured out for a culinary experience at the Shelburne Farms Inn. This historic estate, founded by Eliza Osgood "Lila" Webb, daughter of William H. Vanderbilt, sprawls across over 4,000 acres. Its legacy encompasses a fascinating array of operations, from horse breeding and dairy farming to sheep flocks, piggeries, and extensive gardens. The estate served not only as a working farm but also as a retreat for relaxation and entertainment, complete with a private golf course.

The Shelburne Farms Inn's restaurant prides itself on being a pioneer of Vermont's farm-to-table movement. Its menu is a celebration of seasonal bounty, showcasing the freshest produce from the estate's gardens and neighboring farms. From vibrant vegetables and fruits to artisanal cheeses, succulent lamb and beef, and other farm-fresh delicacies, the dining experience was a symphony of flavors, each bite infused with the essence of Vermont's terroir.

VERMONT FOLK MUSIC

The following day, we indulged in some sightseeing before culminating our Vermont adventure at Shelburne Vineyards. Here, we were treated to a delightful pairing of wine and music. The vineyard hosted a live folk music performance, creating an ambiance that was both enchanting and relaxing. Clementine Dubost, a classically trained pianist and talented folk musician, captivated us with her soulful melodies. Her song, "Port Henry Station," resonated deeply, presenting a monumental moment in her life. The duo Cricket Blue, comprised of Laura Heaberlin and Taylor Smith, further enhanced the musical event with their harmonious blend of talent and chemistry. Their numerous accolades include the title of Best Folk Group in Vermont's Seven Daysie Awards.

Our visit to Shelburne Vineyards, however, also imparted a valuable lesson in time management. As the concert concluded, the vineyard staff efficiently ushered guests towards the exit, eager to close for the evening. In the midst of this orchestrated exodus, we found ourselves scrambling to capture the final video clips. With Mrs. Kay momentarily indisposed in the restroom queue, I had to improvise, hastily filming solo segments. While the results may not have been my finest work, the show, as they say, must go on. We managed to salvage the situation, capturing enough footage to complete our Vermont episode.

The final cut for Shelburne Vineyards and Vermont.

Our Vermont experience was a tapestry of tranquility, history, and culinary delights. From the billboard-free landscapes to the charming covered bridges, the farm-to-table feast at Shelburne Farms Inn, and the melodious serenade at Shelburne Vineyards, Vermont left an indelible mark on our memories. And while the final moments at the vineyard were a whirlwind of improvisation, they served as a reminder that even the most meticulously planned adventures can hold unexpected twists and turns. It's in these moments that we truly learn to adapt, to embrace the spontaneity of life, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. This visit was truly a complete visit to Vermont Farms, Folk Music and Wine.
